When people describe empathy, many think about "walking in another person's shoes" or "feeling what another person feels".  Some people say that if you have empathy, you feel sad when another person feels sad. But if all of this is empathy, then how do we differentiate between sympathy, pity and empathy?

More importantly, how do we live with our natural differences in our psychology and perception?  How do we bridge across differences of culture, belief, preferences, type dynamics and thinking styles when we cannot actually, "walk in each other's shoes"?

True empathy is a quality of listening that is present, curious, powerful and generative.  When we listen to each other (and ourselves) with true, value-based empathy, the positive impact can last a lifetime.

Value-Based Empathy Does Not...

  • Judge or make right/wrong or good/bad

  • Educate, try to fix

  • Re-perspectivize (let's look at the positive side)

  • Change the subject to the listener

  • Leave the speaker with the same trigger again and again

  • Leave the speaker still facing the same emotional charge later

VBE Works

Unlike sympathy or pity, value-based empathy:

  • Resolves

  • Restores

  • Feeds

  • Connects

  • Reduces Fears

  • Creates Relief

  • Heals

  • Opens Possibilities

  • Generates positive next-steps

  • Empowers Win/Win Solutions

  • Befriends

  • Makes Peace

  • Reveals the Divine Face of all of Creation

How?

Value-Based Empathy Works because it:

  • Perceives the innocent core values and needs in self and others

  • Recognizes that emotions point to pure core values

  • Replaces pain-focus or story-focus with a value-focus

  • Accounts for the plural value sets within each of us

  • Results in immediate, measurable emotional shift

  • Generates action steps, requests, and ways to resolve tension

  • Evaporates (even recurring) emotional triggers

  • Develops more effective emotional and problem-solving skills

  • Increases empathy for others

  • Can liberate human beings from the cycle of suffering (and can reveal a path to transcending egoic needs entirely)
